Throughout your career or professional life, you might have to write applications letters while trying to get employment. While different institutions might have slightly different requirements, the rules are generally the same across board. A good application letter sums up your abilities, skills, and qualifications, and convinces your employer that you are a good fit for the job or that hiring you would be a good idea. Here is a sample application letter requested by one of our students from Guyana.

The Personnel Manager,
Guyana Revenue Authority,
Lot X Block X,
West Side, Region 3,
Guyana.
Dear Sir/Madam:
I wish to make formal application to work at the esteemed Guyana Revenue Authority as a clerk or any other suitable position which you may have open. My name is Sabrina Williams. I am 20 years old, and I currently reside within one mile of your Region 3 branch.
I completed the CXC Examinations in 20-- attaining three subjects with grade three pass, one with grade four, and one with grade five. I'm currently studying privately in the evenings to rewrite these subjects and attain better grades in January 2027.
I am well-spoken, pleasant, and attentive to orders, and I strongly believe that I can add real value to your esteemed organization. Further, having grown up in a deeply religious environment, I am an extremely honest and trustworthy person.
I'm very comfortable with computers. I have a typing speed of 50 words per minute and a fair knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite. I can learn new software programs easily.
I would be happy to attend an interview with you at any time convenient for you and produce evidence of my academic and other qualifications. Please feel free to contact me on the phone or email below. Anytime is a good time to call!
Yours in success,
...................

Please note the following:
Most businesses, companies, and organizations now accept applications via email instead of traditional paper mail. This saves you time and money. Research the email of the place you’re applying to and send your application via email. Type it in Microsoft Word format, save it, and then export a copy as PDF. This way, you can edit the same application slightly and send it to other potential employers. Attach the PDF in a simple email as follows:
Dear Sir/Madam:
Please see my application letter attached. I look forward to hearing from you earliest.
Yours truly,
Sabrina Williams.
While your application letter sums up your qualifications, your CV is what does the heavy lifting. A person fresh out of high school might not have lots of things to put on a CV, but you can still create one and build on it as time goes by. A CV clearly outlines your skills, qualifications, work experience, and any special talent in a manner that convinces the employer that you add value to the workplace.
Follow Up
In today’s fast paced world, sending off an application might not be enough to get you hired. At the same time you get the email, get the phone number of your potential employer. You can call them right away and let them know that you just sent an application via email. Ask them to kindly acknowledge receipt. Further, ask them for a timeframe within which you can expect a response. Keep calling them until they give your closure or ask you to come in for an interview. Generally, businesses or organizations are more likely to contract employees who are persistent and express urgency.
