The pronunciation of the word “herb” may trip or confuse some Caribbean speakers. Although Standard Caribbean English patterns after British English, we’re more strongly influenced by American television and other forms of media. So, is herb pronounced “herb” or “erb”? Here is the explanation.
In Standard British English, the “h” in “herb” is fully pronounced. Say “herb.” But in Standard American English, the “h” is dropped. Say “erb.” Since Standard Caribbean English is patterned mostly after British English, we say “herb” with a fully pronounced “h” in the Caribbean.
When speaking English, try to be consistent in your pronunciation. If you are speaking Standard American English, try to follow American phonetics as much as possible. Do the same thing with Standard British and Standard Caribbean English. Bear in mind though, that occasionally mixing up language styles does not necessarily make you wrong or unlearned. The world is so intertwined nowadays that a very small percentage of people have a consistent accent.
