The word “iron” is one of the most commonly mispronounced word for Caribbean residents trying to speak or approximate Standard American English or even Standard British or Caribbean English.
First of all, the British made the “r” in “iron” silent. So, the British pronounced iron as “i-on.” However, after the Americans broke away from Britain and started their own dictionary, they took it a step further. The Americans didn’t just make the “r” silent, they shifted it around. In pronunciation, the Americans place the “r” after “o.” So it becomes “i-orn” in Standard American English, or, for better phonetic spelling, “i-urn.”
Because Standard Caribbean English patterns mostly after British English, the correct pronunciation in Standard Caribbean English is the same as British English, that is “i-on.” But if you want to speak Standard American English, you have to say “i-urn.”
The pronunciation is the same whether you’re talking about “iron” as in a “piece of metal” or “iron” as in “I iron my clothes.” For British and Caribbean English, say “i-on” but for American English, say “i-urn.”
Now practice your pronunciation by saying the following sentences out loud. First, say them using standard American English, that is “i-urn.” Then repeat them using British English, that is, “i-on.”
- Iron is a strong, silver-colored metal.
- Iron is a chemical element on the Periodic Table of Elements.
- Iron is represented by the symbol “Fe” on the Periodic Table of Elements.
- Iron is the most common metal on earth.
- Iron is atomic number 26 on the Periodic Table of Elements.
- Do you iron your clothes for school every morning?
- Does your clothes look neat after you iron it?
- Do you enjoy ironing your clothes, or do you wish you didn’t have to?
- Did you know that the human body needs iron to survive?
- That’s correct! Your body absorbs iron from food!
The word “irony” however, as in the literary device known as “irony,” doesn’t follow the same pattern. Irony is pronounced just the way it is spelled: “i-ron-y.” Now isn’t that ironic!
